October 21, 2026Complete Guide to Paperboard Edge Protectors (Canada & USA)
Paperboard edge protectors—also known as cornerboards or angleboards—are structural profiles used to reinforce palletized products, prevent edge damage, and improve load stability during warehousing and transportation. They are essential for industries that ship heavy, fragile, or tall goods and require reliable protection against compression, impact, and strapping tension.
This guide provides an in-depth technical overview of edge protectors, how they are manufactured, how performance is measured, where they are used, how to choose the right model, and how Canadian manufacturers like Northrich help businesses optimize load protection through sustainable, high-strength solutions.
What Are Edge Protectors?
Reinforce Vertical and Horizontal Edges
They act as rigid columns that increase compression resistance and prevent pallets from collapsing under stacked loads.
Protect Product Corners
They reduce shipping damage by shielding corners from impacts, abrasion, and deformation.
Distribute Strapping and Film Tension
When straps or stretch film are applied, angleboards distribute the pressure across a wider area, preventing cuts or indentations.
Optimize Pallet Stability
By improving rigidity, they enable safer stacking, better cube utilization, and lower packaging waste.
How Edge Protectors Are Manufactured
100% Recycled Paper-Based Material
Industrial edge protectors are built from multiple layers of recycled Kraft paper laminated with water-based adhesives. The number of plies, paper grade and bonding process define overall strength and durability.
- Recycled content
- Water-based adhesives
Forming & Caliper Options
The laminated board is continuously formed into a 90° profile with tight dimensional tolerances. Common caliper ranges include:
- Light duty: approx. 2.5 mm
- Medium duty: approx. 3.8 mm
- Heavy duty: 5 mm and above
Northrich can manufacture custom calipers to match load weight and stacking height requirements.
Custom Lengths & Poly-Coated Options
Edge protectors can be produced in custom lengths for pallet height, product dimensions or internal packaging. For high-humidity or refrigerated environments, poly-coated edge protectors maintain structural integrity and resist moisture.
Engineering Performance & Compression Strength
Compression Resistance
The performance of an edge protector is defined by its ability to resist compression and maintain rigidity under load. Key factors include paper grade, caliper, number of plies, adhesive quality, moisture exposure and overall load configuration.
Northrich publishes compression performance data for its AngleGuard™ range, confirming suitability for:
- Heavy manufacturing and industrial loads
- Furniture, doors and windows
- Food, produce and beverage pallets
- Appliances and electronics
Strap-Pressure Protection
When combined with plastic or steel strapping, edge protectors distribute pressure over a wider area and help prevent strap cutting, crushing and visual damage. This is especially important for high-value or fragile items where edge condition matters at delivery.
Types of Edge Protectors
Standard Paperboard Edge Protectors
Cost-effective profiles made from 100% recycled fibre, suitable for most general industrial and distribution environments.
Heavy-Duty Edge Protectors
Thicker calipers designed for tall pallets, heavy products, building materials and long-distance transport where higher compression resistance is required.
Poly-Coated Edge Protectors
Moisture-resistant cornerboards for cold-chain, produce, floral, refrigerated and export applications where humidity or condensation are key risks.
Custom Printed Edge Protectors
Custom printing can display branding, handling instructions or internal identification directly on the edge protectors, turning a structural component into a communication surface.
Specialty Formats
Edge protectors can also be configured for horizontal top-of-pallet protection, internal corner reinforcement or extra-long materials such as doors, frames and other building products.

Where Northrich Fits
As a Quebec-based manufacturer, Northrich combines the benefits of local production, 100% recycled paper-based materials, poly-coated options for demanding environments and specialized expertise in doors and windows, furniture, appliances, food, produce and general manufacturing. This makes Northrich particularly relevant for buyers in Quebec, Ontario and the Northeastern United States.
How to Select the Right Edge Protector
- Determine load weight and stacking height. Heavier or taller pallets typically require thicker calipers and higher compression performance.
- Assess moisture exposure. Cold-chain, produce, floral and export shipments often justify poly-coated, moisture-resistant profiles.
- Evaluate product sensitivity. Fragile or visually sensitive products such as doors, windows and furniture benefit from heavy-duty edge protection.
- Consider transport distance and handling. Longer routes and multiple handling points increase the need for robust protection and pallet stability.
- Align with sustainability goals. 100% recycled, paper-based materials support ESG objectives and waste-reduction strategies.
- Choose the right type of supplier. Working directly with a manufacturer generally provides higher customization, more stable lead times and better technical support.
Recycled Paper & the WeCare Framework
Paperboard edge protectors are one of the most sustainable forms of protective packaging. Northrich’s profiles are manufactured from 100% recycled paper-based fibres and are fully recyclable after use, supporting circular packaging strategies.
This reduces reliance on plastic- or foam-based corner protection and helps organizations lower the overall environmental footprint of their packaging systems.
The WeCare Framework
Through its WeCare framework, Northrich reinforces its commitment to:
- Responsible fibre sourcing
- Waste minimization and recycling
- Efficient resource and energy use
- Continuous improvement in sustainable packaging

Frequently Asked Questions
How do edge protectors improve pallet stability?
They act as vertical reinforcement, increasing compression resistance and helping pallets maintain their shape when stacked or transported.
What caliper should I choose?
Light loads can use thinner profiles, while heavy or tall pallets typically require thicker calipers (3.8 mm or more). A manufacturer can recommend the correct specification based on your weights and stacking heights.
Are paperboard edge protectors recyclable?
Yes. Northrich’s protectors are made from 100% recycled fibres and are fully recyclable after use.
When should I use poly-coated edge protectors?
Poly-coated edge protectors are recommended for refrigerated, humid or high-condensation environments, as well as export shipments where moisture is a risk factor.
